Course Information

Spend spring break crewing a houseboat on Lake Mead in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada/Arizona where you will be introduced to the fundimentals of small boat driving, navigation (traditional and electronic), GPS, and recreational boating safety.

Seamanship

You will receive instruction in boating safety using the State of Nevada's Boat Nevada Safe Boating Course. Subjects will include rules of the road, navigation, understanding aids to navigation, boater legal responsiblities, and safety equipment requirements. Upon successful completion of the course with a score 80% or greater, you will be issued a certificate of completion from the State of Nevada Department of Wildlife. This certificate is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and will satisfy the requirements of most states that require a safe boating course prior to being able to legally operate a boat in their waters.

You will also learn how to use GPS, chart courses, and plot positions using both paper and electronic charts.

Operations

It's your ship! Learn what it takes to run a ship by running it yourself. Cadets selected for the training will be assigned a billet with specific duties and responsiblities. This training will be as successful and fun as you make it. You will have to work with your shipmates to plan voyages and meals. Some cadets will have the opportunity to manage budgets of up to $1300.

Do you think you are cut out for any of the following positions?

- Operations Officer

The operations officer is responsible to the executive officer for the general supervision of cadets aboard as the senior cadet in charge and to the commanding officer for matters relating to the operational readiness.

Serve as cadet in charge at formations. Maintain accountability of cadets at all times. Make reports of accountability to the executive officer at 0800, 1200, 2000. Prepare underway schedule for approval by the commanding officer. Supervise the preparation charts and routes. Prepare and file daily float plan and evening position report. Ensure all equipment with the exception of engines and engineering equipment is ready for operations. Ensure the boat’s log is maintained in a professional manner and all necessary entries are made by watch-standers. Manage the conning officer watch schedule.

- Navigator

The navigator is the assistant to the operations officer responsible to the operations officer for proper maintenance of charts and navigation equipment and to the commanding officer for the safe navigation of the boat.

Select waypoints and prepare charts and routes for each day’s voyage for the approval of the commanding officer. Ensure an accurate plot of the boat’s position is maintained by electronic, visual or other appropriate means. Ensure an accurate log of the boat’s position and courses is maintained. Advise the commanding officer and officer of the deck of navigational hazards and safe course to be steered. Manage the quartermaster of the watch schedule.

- Assistant Navigator

The assistant navigator is responsible to the navigator for assisting him in the performance of his duties.

- Supply Officer/Food Service Officer

The food service officer is responsible to the operations officer for the procurement and storage of command supplies and the proper accounting of training finances and the effective operations and efficient administration of the galley.

Make all purchases of provisions and supplies for the command. Manage the command meal budget. Keep track of all funds expended by the training. Prepare the command menu for approval by the commanding officer. Supervise the preparation of meals in accordance with the approved menu. Ensure provisions are stored in a clean and sanitary manner. Make daily inspection of food storage and preparation areas to ensure their cleanliness.

- Galley Supervisor

The galley supervisor is the assistant to the food service officer responsible for the preparation of meals in accordance with the approved menu.

Ensure provisions are broken out for meals. Supervise mess cooks and manage the mess cook schedule. Ensure meals are prepared in a clean and sanitary environment. Ensure the galley and food preparation surfaces are sanitized prior and after each meal. Keep the Food Service Officer apprised of food supplies.

- Engineer Officer

The engineer officer is responsible to the commanding officer for the regular monitoring of engines, marine sanitation devices, potable water and fuel.

Monitor potable water consumption ensuring tank levels do not fall below 25%. Monitor fuel tank levels ensuring levels do not fall below 25%. Manage command fuel budget and make all purchases of fuel. Manage fuel consumption to ensure expenditure remains within budgeted amount. Monitor main holding tank levels. Arrange for pumping of main holding tank at shore facility as necessary. Operate boat service electrical generator. Coordinate with operations officer to ensure engineering equipment is ready and that planned operations are within fuel budget limits. Report any abnormalities to the commanding officer.

- Assistant Engineer Officer

The assistant public affairs officer is responsible to the public affairs officer for assisting him in the performance of his duties

- First Lieutenant

The first lieutenant is responsible to the commanding officer for all matters relating to deck seamanship and to the executive officer for the material readiness of the boat.

Supervise all work parties including all on load and off load evolutions. Manage the boatswain mate of the watch schedule. Ensure the cleanliness of all exterior surfaces and interior spaces not assigned to another officer. Ensure the anchor and all mooring lines are maintained in working order and are ready for deployment. Ensure all boat safety gear is accounted for and ready for deployment. Assign crewmembers sweepers cleaning stations.

- Administrative Officer

The administrative officer is responsible to the executive officer for the all administrative matters.

Make appropriate entries in services records documenting member accomplishments at training. Preparing necessary awards and certificates certifying course completion. Any other administrative duties the executive officer shall direct.

- Public Affairs Officer

The public affairs officer is responsible to the executive officer for maintaining the command web site and creating the command cruise book.

Be the command photographer recording the events of the training. Be the command webmaster and update the command weblog with photos and text each day. Develop a cruise book for members of the crew.

Fun!

And of course last but certainly not least, you will be spending spring break on Lake Mead one of the largest man made lakes in the country. Over 240 square miles of water surrounded with plenty of opportunities for swimming, hiking, and fishing (requires licence). Each night we will beach the boat and you will have the option of camping on the beach (tents provided) or sleeping on the boat.
