MASTER-AT-ARMS ACADEMY

JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL ACADEMY

MAA Law Enforcement Academy New England will be instructed by personnel from the Naval Security Force, Navy MAA's, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, and NCIS Special Agents, and various other state and local police forces. LCDR Hull, a professor of Criminal Justice at Saint Anselm College, will be instructing as well.

Topics covered at the MAA Law Enforcement Academy will include the US Constitution, basic criminal law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), police patrol procedures, criminal investigations, the continuum of force, searching, handcuffing, basic takedown and arrest procedures, firearms familiarization, SWAT tactics, and military, federal, state, and local law enforcement careers, among many others.

Each student will have the opportunity to do a ride-along with a Newport Police Department Patrolman during the training, in order to observe police officers on the job. MAA cadets will also participate in firearms familiarization with police instructors.

This is a physically and mentally demanding training. Cadets will participate in morning PT, attend classes and engage in practical exercises for 8-10 hours, will participate in evening PT and defensive tactics, and will have 30-50 pages of reading each night.

Students are required to return signed waivers of liability to LCDR Hull in order to reserve a billet. Please note that Newport Police Form 1b requires notarization.

This training will be run concurrently with Judge Advocate General Legal Academy New England; berthing and messing will be combined, but the students will have very different experiences. Choose your challenge!

This JAG program is the only one like it in the NSCC! JAG Legal Academy New England will be instructed by Naval Justice School Instructors as well as LCDR Hull, who has both a law degree and a background in Criminal Justice. Topics covered will include the US Constitution, the structure of the courts, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), substantive and procedural criminal law, evidence law, general and special courts-martial, the law of war, rules of engagement, non-judicial punishment, trial practice, and JAG Corps and Legalman careers, among many others.

JAG Legal Academy students will be given a case their first night in Newport, and will be expected to work with their "co-counsel" to prepare their case for oral argument in a mock trial scheduled for the end of the training.

This will be an academically intense training. All JAG students will be required to read several chapters and brief an appellate case each evening, will be called on and expected to participate in class, and will be required to make arguments or conduct questioning during the mock trial.

Students are required to return a signed waiver of liability to LCDR Hull in order to reserve a billet.

This training will be running concurrently with Master At Arms Law Enforcement Academy New England; berthing and messing will be combined, but the students will have very different experiences. Choose your challenge!
