MASTER-AT-ARMS ACADEMY

JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL ACADEMY

MAA Law Enforcement Academy New England will be instructed by personnel from Naval Station Newport Security, Navy MAA’s, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, and NCIS Special Agents, and various other state and local police forces. LT Hull will instruct as well; he holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice as well as a law degree, and has worked for the Barnstable, MA Police Department, the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Topics covered at the MAA Law Enforcement Academy will include the US Constitution, basic criminal law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), police patrol procedures, criminal investigations, the continuum of force, basic takedown and arrest procedures, and military, federal, state, and local law enforcement careers, among many others.

Each student will have the opportunity to do a ride-along with a Newport Police Department Patrolman during the training, in order to observe police officers on the job. MAA cadets may also have an opportunity to use the FATS (Fire Arms Training Simulator) with the NPD.

This is a physically and mentally demanding training. On top of regular class time, students are expected to participate in PT twice per day (in addition to any physical instruction they may receive in takedown procedures or handcuffing, etc), and participate in ride-alongs which will frequently take place at the conclusion of the training day. As such, cadets must be E3 and 15 years old to attend MAA Law Enforcement Academy New England. Students are also required to return a signed waiver of liability to LT Hull PRIOR TO THE START OF THE TRAINING, which indemnifies the Navy, the NSCC, and any instructors from liability for accidents.

This training will be run concurrently with Judge Advocate General Legal Academy New England; berthing and messing will be combined, as well as an anticipated trip to the Buttercup Damage Control Trainer.

JAG Legal Academy New England will be instructed by Naval Justice School Instructors as well as LTJG Hull, who has both a law degree and background in Criminal Justice. Topics covered will include the US Constitution, the structure of the courts, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), substantive and procedural criminal law, general and special courts-martial, trial practice, and JAG Corps and Legalman careers, among many others.

JAG Legal Academy students will be given a case their first night in Newport, and will be expected to prepare their case for oral argument in a mock trial scheduled for the end of the training.

This will be an academically intense training. All JAG students will be required to read and brief several appellate cases each evening, will be called on and expected to participate in class, and will be required to make arguments or conduct questioning during the mock trial. As such, cadets must be at least age 15 to participate in this training. Students are also required to return a signed waiver of liability to LT Hull PRIOR TO THE START OF THE TRAINING, which indemnifies the Navy, the NSCC, and any instructors from liability for accidents.

This training will be running concurrently with Master At Arms Law Enforcement Academy New England; berthing and messing will be combined, as well as an anticipated trip to the Buttercup Damage Control Trainer.
