Comfortable with Hard Things

“For me, the Sea Cadet program gave a kid from Colorado in the 1980s with an insatiable desire to join the military the opportunity to find his calling. Sea Cadets taught me immeasurable lessons. I learned leadership, accountability, and camaraderie, among many other qualities. The program prepared me well for a long career as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.”

Jonathan G., alumnus

“What I learned in Sea Cadets helped me get into law school and be successful in law school. Attention to detail, discipline, and being organized are all skills that helped me with the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and getting through three years of rigorous learning. As a cadet I was often put in leadership positions which honed my public speaking abilities.”

Joshua G., alumnus

“When I was promoted to Navy Captain it was in the back of my mind that my days as a Sea Cadet were the first steps toward this milestone. In my shadow box my Sea Cadet ribbons sit proudly next to my US Navy awards and warfare pin.”

William B., alumnus

“Being a Sea Cadet revealed to me that the world was so much bigger than I had imagined and that there were adventures to be had at every stage of life. After more than fifty years, I can still recall those individuals (mostly Navy veterans) who decided that young people like me were worthy of their time. I will always be grateful to those remarkable Sea Cadet officers.”

Kempton B., alumnus
